If the dog has diarrhoea, many owners first resort to home remedies. That's understandable - after all, you want to help quickly. But this is exactly where caution is advised: most home remedies are not a solution and can even mask the cause or worsen the condition.
Why home remedies for diarrhoea should be viewed critically
Diarrhoea is not a problem in itself, but rather a symptom. It can have many causes, for example:
- Food intolerances
- Infections (bacterial, viral, parasitic)
- stress
- Poisonings
Inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract
Home remedies usually do not treat the cause, but at most the symptom in the short term. This can lead to serious illnesses being detected too late.
👉 Basic rule: The longer diarrhoea lasts, the less appropriate home remedies become.
These home remedies are considered acceptable in the short term
There are only a few measures that can be useful in acute cases and for a short period of time - provided the dog is otherwise fit.
✔️ Moro’s carrot soup
It can help protect the intestinal wall and support bacteria binding.
Suitable for: mild, acute diarrhoea
Not suitable for: prolonged diarrhoea, fever, blood in the stool
✔️ Psyllium husks (always soaked!)
They can bind excess fluid and regulate faeces.
Important: only soaked correctly and dosed very carefully
✔️ Charcoal tablets (activated carbon)
They can bind toxins - but only in an emergency and not permanently.
Attention: Activated carbon also binds medications and nutrients.
👉 These measures are temporary support, not treatment.
What is explicitly not recommended
Many common tips are problematic:
- Yoghurt, quark, kefir (dairy products)
- Herbal mixtures without clear indications
- essential oils
- Sugar, honey, cola

They can further irritate the intestines or mask symptoms.
When home remedies are no longer acceptable
If you notice any of the following signs at the latest, go to the vet:
Diarrhoea lasting more than 24-48 hours
Blood or mucus in the faeces
Puppies, very small or old dogs
- Fever
- Vomiting
- severe fatigue
Suspected giardia, parasites or poisoning
The longer you wait, the harder it is for the intestines to recover.
The role of feeding in diarrhoea
Improper feeding is one of the most common triggers for recurring diarrhoea. What is important is:
- appropriate amount of food
- easily digestible composition
- no rapid, repeated food changes
no experiments with added extras during diarrhoea phases
Food cannot cure diarrhoea, but eating the wrong food can prolong it.

The only short-term justifiable measures are:
