Well-functioning digestion is a crucial factor for your dog's well-being. If the gastrointestinal tract is out of balance - be it due to diarrhoea, constipation, intolerances or a sensitive intestinal mucosa - psyllium husks can be a natural and gentle support.
The fine seed shells of the Plantago ovata plant can be used in a variety of ways and have proven to be effective both for acute complaints and for long-term support of intestinal health.
What are psyllium husks?
Psyllium husks come from the ispaghula plant (Plantago ovata) and consist of purely vegetable fibre. Their ability to bind large amounts of water is particularly valuable. This creates a slimy gel that has a regulating, protective and calming effect in the digestive tract.
They are considered a well-tolerated complementary food and are used in BARF, home-cooked food and ready-made food.
Benefits of Psyllium Husk for Dogs
1. Regulation of digestion
Psyllium husks have a balancing effect - regardless of whether the faeces are too soft or too firm.
- When your dog has diarrhoea, they bind excess water
- In the event of constipation, they stimulate intestinal movement through volume and moisture
- They serve as food for “good” intestinal bacteria and support healthy intestinal flora
2. Protection of the stomach and intestinal mucosa
When mixed with water, psyllium husks form a protective mucous film that covers the mucous membranes like a gentle protective coat.
- Can have a calming effect on irritated gastrointestinal tracts
- Can support dogs with heartburn, inflammation or sensitive digestion
3. Vegetable portion in case of intolerances
If dogs do not tolerate vegetables or fruit well - permanently or temporarily - psyllium husks can replace part of the plant-based food content and still provide important fibre.
Application & dosage
Dosage:
- 1 g dry psyllium husks per 5 kg body weight per day
Preparation:
- 20–30 ml of water per 1 g of psyllium husks
- Stir in cold water (e.g. with a whisk)
- Let it soak for at least 20 minutes
- Then mix it into the food
- Ideally, spread the psyllium gel over several meals
💡 Tip: Always start with a small amount. Many dogs react very positively to even small doses.
Important information about long-term feeding
If psyllium husks are used as a substitute for vegetables or fruit over a longer period of time, inulin and, if necessary, pectin should also be supplemented to completely cover the fibre requirement.
The exact amount should be adjusted individually and accompanied by an expert.
Leave a gap between psyllium and medicines
Psyllium husks can interfere with the absorption of medications because the gel forms a protective layer in the intestines.
- Feed at least 30 minutes AFTER medication administration, not at the same time or before
Tips for feeding
Better acceptance:
- Psyllium gel can be mixed well with plant-based yoghurt (e.g. coconut yoghurt), goat yoghurt or normal yoghurt.
Be careful with dosage:
- Psyllium husks swell strongly. If they are not sufficiently prepared with water or if the dog drinks too little, constipation can occur.
- Always let it swell sufficiently and make sure your dog drinks enough fluids.
Notes on tolerance
Dogs with an allergy to plantain species may react sensitively. Possible signs are:
- itching
- Paw licking
- watery eyes
- Diarrhoea
Observe your dog carefully after feeding and stop giving psyllium husks if you notice any adverse signs.
Conclusion: Natural support for your dog's intestines
Psyllium husks are a versatile, natural supplement that can regulate digestion, support the intestinal flora and protect the mucous membranes. Properly dosed and well prepared, they can make a valuable contribution to your dog's intestinal health.
Frequently asked questions
Answered briefly and understandably
How do I dose psyllium husks for dogs?
Introduce them gradually, always with plenty of water and observe the consistency of the stool. The right amount depends on weight and tolerance.
When does psyllium husk not help?
In the event of acute diarrhoea, vomiting or suspected parasites, the cause should first be clarified by a vet.
