My dog keeps lip-smacking their lips: when to act

When a dog smacks its lips, many owners only notice it late. Frequent or persistent lip-smacking can be an important signal that something in the body is out of balance.
Is lip-smacking normal for dogs?
In certain situations, lip-smacking is completely harmless. Many dogs smack their lips:
- shortly before eating out of anticipation
- immediately after eating to get rid of leftover food
- while sleeping or relaxing

- smacks his lips at night or early in the morning
