What’s behind it and how you can help
Reverse sneezing sounds scary at first to many dog owners, but in most cases it is harmless. The dog suddenly sucks in air through its nose, stretches its neck and briefly appears as if it cannot breathe.
Triggers can be irritation of the nasal mucosa, for example due to dust, pollen, dry air, excitement or sudden changes in temperature. Reverse sneezing is particularly common in small dog breeds or brachycephalic dogs, but can basically affect any dog.
A single attack is usually not a cause for concern. It is important to remain calm as excitement can prolong the event.
Here's how you can help
You can help your dog by gently calming him down, talking to him calmly and briefly encouraging him to swallow - for example by lightly stroking his neck or carefully covering his nose for one to two seconds. Swallowing can help break the stimulus.
When you should go to the vet
However, if reverse sneezing occurs very frequently, lasts for an unusually long time or is accompanied by nasal discharge, fever or general malaise, a veterinary evaluation should be carried out. In these cases, inflammation, allergies or anatomical causes can be behind it.
In most cases, however, reverse sneezing is only a temporary reaction and is harmless to the dog.
